Abstract| This paper explores the distribution of population elements among niches arising under deterministic crowding. Cross-over interactions among niches are observed, isolated, and explained. Ideal behavior is compared with actual behavior on a variety of multimodal optimization problems, including a multimodal deceptive problem.

Population Sizing for Sharing Methods
Sharing methods promote the formation and maintenance of stable subpopulations or niches in genetic algorithms. This paper derives, for various models of sharing, lower bounds on the population size required to maintain, with probability , a xed number of niches. The rst model assumes all niches are equivalent with respect to tness and that crossover is minimally disruptive. The next two models...
متن کاملUntangling the roles of parasites in food webs with generative network models
Food webs represent the set of consumer-resource interactions among a set of species that co-occur in a habitat, but most food web studies have omitted parasites and their interactions. Recent studies have provided conflicting evidence on whether including parasites changes food web structure, with some suggesting that parasitic interactions are structurally distinct from those among free-livin...
متن کاملStem cells, their niches and the systemic environment: an aging network.
Stem cells have a fascinating biology and offer great prospects for therapeutic applications, stimulating intense research on what controls their properties and behavior. Although there have been significant advances in our understanding of how local microenvironments, or niches, control the maintenance and activity of stem cells, it is much less well understood how stem cells sense and respond...
متن کاملApplication of Crossover Analysis-logistic Regression in the Assessment of Gene- environmental Interactions for Colorectal Cancer.
BACKGROUND Analysis of gene-gene and gene-environment interactions for complex multifactorial human disease faces challenges regarding statistical methodology. One major difficulty is partly due to the limitations of parametric-statistical methods for detection of gene effects that are dependent solely or partially on interactions with other genes or environmental exposures. Based on our previo...
متن کاملPersistent social interactions beget more pronounced personalities in a desert-dwelling social spider.
The social niche specialization hypothesis predicts that repeated social interactions will generate social niches within groups, thereby promoting consistent individual differences in behaviour. Current support for this hypothesis is mixed, probably because the importance of social niches is dependent upon the ecology of the species. We test whether repeated interactions among group mates gener...
